All You Need To Know About The Insect-Borne Viral Disease Dengue

There has been a significant rise in the number of dengue cases in India in the recent past. Dengue is an insect-borne viral disease that is normally spread through Aedes mosquito. It is mostly seen during rainy season as waterlogged areas, damp areas, or flood water provides a perfect environment for mosquitoes to breed.

The virus enters the bloodstream of an individual when he/she is bitten by the Aedes mosquito. There are four types of dengue viruses namely EN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, & DEN-4, and it can be caused by any of the mentioned viruses.

 Symptoms:  
  • High fever, up to 104 F
  • Pain in joints and muscles 
  • Causes severe headache
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Vomiting and bruising
  • Bleeding from nose and mouth
  • Rashes
  • Nausea
  • Haemorrhage
  • Appearance of red spots and blisters under the skin
  • Black stools
  • Pain behind the eyes  
Symptoms of dengue can be mild or at times may be severe. The symptoms normally last for 2-7 days. However, if any of the above-mentioned symptoms persist, see a doctor immediately. Dengue can also cause severe damage to important organs of the body and eventually leads to death.

Thus, in the first place, it is better to avoid being bitten by the mosquitoes.

Here are a few things you should know about how to keep dengue at bay:
  • Always use mosquito mesh and repellents at home.
  • Do not allow water to stagnate near your home and always keep your surroundings clean.
  • Use protective clothing and wear full sleeves clothes when you are surrounded by mosquitoes.
  • Don't keep garbage at home, clean it as and when necessary.
  • Ensure that you consume only clean water. It is advisable to boil water before drinking.
